Palisade Head

Another great view point is Palisade Head.  This is an awesome spot for rock climbing!  I haven't climbed it - I've never known anyone up there to climb with - but I would love to someday!  On almost any given day - in good weather, that is - you can find climbers out there.  It is a sheer drop off, so don't wander too close!  And don't kick rocks on the climbers - they don't like that!  The view here is great - straight down is even better!  Look to the north and you can see Shovel Point in Tettegouche.

I wouldn't recommend being up here in a thunderstorm.  You will be tall and exposed on the rock.  A good lightning rod.  Again, its fun to climb around the rocks, just have to watch that darn edge!  There really aren't guardrails to protect you, yet I can't recall hearing of anyone that fell off the cliff - though I'm sure it happens.

Its a good 100 foot drop to the rocks below.  In late summer, you can find wild blueberries growing in the bushes on top of Palisade Head.  Mmmm!

Palisade Head is part of Tettegouche State Park. The entrance is not well marked.  As you drive by, you see a steep, narrow, winding paved road with a small parking lot at the bottom and a small sign that says State Park.  You can't take trailers or RVs up there and the road is so narrow that you hope you don't meet any other cars on the way up or down.  The top has a small parking lot and plenty of rocks to walk around on, but be careful!
