Auckland City Scenes
Auckland is the main gateway for travellers to New Zealand and is our biggest city - but still small compared to most major cities of the world. A few days here is a great way to overcome jet lag and acclimatize your body-clock after a long flight. Remember you are in an island nation sitting in the South Pacific with our nearest major nation, Australia, over 2000 kms to our west. So we are somewhat isolated, unique and we live in a diverse land. New Zealand's inhabitants are also diverse and Auckland is claimed to hold the largest population of Polynesians in the world. New Zealanders are made up of:
1. Pakeha = Maori name given to New Zealanders with European ancestry.
2. Maori = Considered the first people to inhabit New Zealand.
3.
4. Asians = A growing number of immigrants from various countries of Asia.
5. Mixture of other world peoples.
To get a birds eye view of Auckland, a number of volcanic cones situated within the metropolitan area, is a good way to get you bearings. The main cones are Mt Eden (Maungawhau), One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie) also Mt Victoria and North Head on Auckland's North Shore. All mentioned have vehicle access and Mt Eden has coach tour operaters running regular trips to its summit. Rangitoto Island is also a must see and is only a short cruise from downtown Auckland.
