The Castle seen from the hotel

A normal day for once?

I got up too early down there, which was a consequence of the lack of night life in Santiago do Cacem but it was my own choice and I really loved it. Santiago is a city where you hardly ever met strangers, unless they are in the area and discover the ruins of the castle on the top of the hill and want to check it out.

The day before I had gotten the rental car so I could move around again and I had the good fortune of finding O Auro. The day had ended pretty well, so I had high hopes of starting from there this morning. I skipped breakfast after the huge meal the day before and I didn't feel like it, and I had some wonderful pessegoe (peaches) in my room from the day before.

I drove in to town feeling it was too early for the beach so by an impulse I decided to visit the castle and the church on the top of the hill. It was actually the first time I had done that in the day time and I could probably get inside for the first time.

When I arrived I was almost alone up there. I went in to the church for the first time and it look a lot larger from inside than outside. It reminded me of a large countryside church in Denmark. It was kept very basic and there were not many details that just took your curiosity. I walked around took a few pictures until a woman came up next to me and said that it was prohibited. I left signing my name in the church book and saw that most of the other visitors were from Portugal.

I went in to the castle and found that the centre of it was converted into a cemetery and it was quite full. I entered the castle wall to get a good view of the surrounding landscape; there were suddenly no doubt why they had chosen this spot for their fortress hundreds of years ago. The view was great.

Just after noon I decided to go for the beach; getting grilled was the plan - I had missed a couple of days down here, and this the place I need to be at least some days every year charging the batteries.
