Today we said our farewells to the beautiful Nikko Hotel and took a private car to Furama Villa'S and Spa located about a 15 minute drive from the center of Ubud. It took around an hour and a half to get to the hotel and cost 250,000 rupiah(25$)  I may of been able to get it for a little cheaper but I didn't bargain last night as I was quite tired but it was still far cheaper than what the Nikko hotel had offered 390,000 rupiah($39) so i was happy with that.

We arrived around 12 O'clock but we couldn't check in until 2pm. We were served a welcome drink and booked a BBQ dinner at the restraunt for the night. A free shuttle service is provided by the villas 6 times a day to take you to Ubud. One left at 1pm so we took that in to explore Ubud , the cultural centre of Ubud.

We had only 4 hours as we wanted to be back around 5.30 to enjoy the private pool in our villa and to kick back and relax.

While on the shuttle bus we started talking to the other couple from Russia who were on their honeymoon and we explored Ubud palace together. Ubud palace was built in 1917 and the royal family still live there.  You are free to wander around the compound, exploring the many traditional buildings and the exquisite stone carving found around the compound. It is possible to even stay at the palace.

Time for a drink and some lunch we wandered off to Casa Luna, a really nice cafe which has a great selection of sandwiches and coffee. This was the first place we had gotten something to eat and drink in Ubud and the service was really slow, this place was by far the fastest though but still real slow.

This might be all part of the Ubud experience though.

About 100 metres up from the palace their is a square with a beautiful lotus garden its a fine place to take a stroll and look at pretty Lotus blossoms and the fine carvings that honour Dewi Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and the arts who has clearly given her blessings to Ubud. Just outside the square there is the Lotus Cafe. You can sit by the ponds only if you have lunch there. A beautiful place to be seated if you need something to eat.

Walking around the streets, brousing at the beautiful art and crafts shops around Ubud is a pleasant way to spend time, unlike other places in Bali, the people just let you browse without being harrassed it felt comfortable compared to the raucous South.

Wanting to get a better understanding of Balinese art we entered the fine Puri Lukisan musuem which features the masterpieces of Balinese art from the likes of Gusti Nyoman Lempard who died at the age of 116. The art also shows paintings from the Wayang style and the period of the Pita Maha. The other building displays Modern art from the young artists of today. When in Bali you should check one of the Musuems of art, either this one or the AARMA musem or the Neka art musuem.

Five o'clock came quickly and it was time to catch the shuttle bus back to Furama Villas. We were shown to our room, it was beautiful with our large private pool an outdoor shower, a canopy bed and a huge bath, I mean gigantic bath. I sure it could fit three of me in it. Had a great dip in the pool before going out to dinner. The BBQ featured steak, sausages, fish, ribs and was cooked made to order the way you wanted it while they had  a salad and dessert bar. This was accompanied with 3 Balinese dancers to cap off a special night.
