Scheveningen, Fireworks!
August 16, 2008
Yearly in August the International Fireworks Competition takes place in Scheveningen. It is a three-day, well-visited (if not overcrowded), Fireworks Festival. Day after day competitors from all over the world compete with showcases of their best fireworks. The Competition is the pinnacle of the fireworks festival that takes place several weekends in July and August.
This year we decided to overcome our aversion of large crowds and join the other (over one hundred thousand) spectators of this magnificent show. So, with the camera firmly secured on tripod and food & beverage at hand, we settled on one of the best spots to view the colourful display the countries had in store for the 29th time this festival commenced.
It is always a gamble where to take post along the coast. The fireworks are lit from barges afloat at sea. Depending on wind and waves, in line with safety regulations, it is only minutes before the display that the captain decides where to 'park' the barge. We got lucky; he parked right in front of us. And we got even more lucky; it so happened that the magnificent show we saw, was in fact the winning display of Mexico.
