Eiger, Munch & Jungfrau mountains
Murren is a nice village in the Swiss Alps, overlooking the Eiger and Jungfrau mountains. The town is accessible from the nearby town of Lauterbrunnen via cable car and narrow gauge railway. Murren is a small place and it takes only 15 minutes to walk from the railway station at one end of the village to the Shilthorn cable car link at the other. Many of the buildings are built in the old traditional style which makes for a pleasant stroll.
The cable car links Murren to the Shilthorn Mountain and the Piz Gloria building 10,000ft up at the top.
This was the filming location for the 1969 James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and is a bit of a mecca if you are a Bond fan. The star attraction here is the revolving restaurant which takes about 50 minutes to go the full way round and serves (expensive) food and nice hot chocolate. Bond fans will note that some parts of the building have not changed since the film was made 40 years ago (see the railings on the stairs and Blofeld's coat of arms on the wall). Downstairs is a large room showing some short films of the surrounding area and a 5 minute edit of the James Bond scenes shot at Piz Gloria. Outside there is a sun terrace (although needs to be a sunny day) which was used as a helipad in the film.
Weather was poor at the top with intermittent rain and there was a lot of mist making visibility poor so I can’t really comment on the views but I would imagine they must be spectacular on a clear day.
I decided to take the cable car back down to Murren and have a walk. Well, a sign suggested that Lauterbrunnen was only 1 hour 40 minutes away so I set off what turned out to be a 2 and a half hour downhill slog to the nearest town. The downhill slope was relentless and by the time I got to the bottom my legs were like jelly, thank god there was a cable car back. This is not a recommended walk unless you are a seriously fit fell runner with a knee replacement!
There is not much to do in the way of nightlife in Murren but after a day’s mountain air and a long walk it was nice to sit outside with a beer chatting to other visitors (Murren seems to be popular with British and American tourists) and then have an early night.
