HSBC Tree Top Walk
July 31, 2009
I would describe the place in general as a place for a nice stroll amongst the non-concreted jungle of Singapore.
The entrance for the suspension bridge (hence tree top walk) is situated not far from the Singapore Island Country Club. You can reach it via the reservoir route or via a shorter trail past the country club.
Be prepared to meet some primates along the way (monkeys & humans). Strangely, the monkeys seem quieter than many of the humans that go about. Some give loud lectures to their kids about the monkeys, all whilst pointing their umbrella or stick into the face of the monkey. It's incredible that they don't get mauled right away. If someone did that to you, chances are they would be force fed their umbrella in a few minutes. Well, I spent about half an hour, just watching them and rolling a few figs over to the little ones. The adults would be up in the taller trees having a good time anyway. They might cheekily pelt you with a few figs though. And yes, they will laugh at you. (it's written all over their face) It's not done viciously and they'll get used to you being there and go about their business.
Another inhabitant you will notice (if you look where you step and not just into the sky), is the monitor lizard (of the varanus family). Of various sizes, from 1 foot long to 6 feet (incl tail), they can be in the bushes & leaves or even swimming in the water. They generally leave you alone and if you don't scream & shout (i.e. go hysterical) you can get very close to them. My camera wasn't equipped with zoom lenses so I missed out on some great shots. (and my reflexes were quite slow too)
