They could be talking to one another, trying to court one another or maybe just swearing very musically to one another. (who knows ?) Or they could be singing their last as the sun goes higher and higher in the sky. I watched as the owners retired to the nearest coffee shop to wait patiently for the birds to do a slow roast. Some did sit near their slowly cooking birds (was I imagining that the birds were singing a little louder or maybe sounded a wee bit more frantic ?), but they did so in the shade of the nearest tree.
This hobby is dying out these days as less people are inclined to care such birds. They take quite a lot of mucking about to get them to sing correctly. Leave them alone with the TV all day and soon enough you will get a bird which will imitate the TV. That's no bloody use for a singing competition ! I've experienced a bird which growled and meowed convincingly at me (while in Indonesia), that left me looking under the seat and around me in mounting concern as the sounds grew louder. Some are good at imitating sounds. Just make sure it makes the sounds you want. (not the local swear words when it's that fellows turn to sing)
