BAR HARBOR HAS IT ALL

When you approach the island for the first time, you will not be greeted by towering skyscrapers, crowded overpasses, or factories.  We don't have any of that.  But you will be greeted by looming mountains in the distance, senic ocean views, the refreshing breeze off the sea, and quiet little villages each unique with their own shops.

Bar Harbor opens its arms to over 3 million visitors each year, and regardless if your here for a day, a weekend, or a week or longer, you will always find something new and different to do each day.  Anything from a quiet stroll along the senic shore path in town, to shopping the many tiny shops that line the narrow streets, which offer everything from tee shirts to home made fudge to ice cream or gifts, there is something fr everyone.

Shops with a different twist include a real old fashion soda fountain inside the West End Drug store (meals here are also thelowest priced in town), the whale meseum with its whale exhibit and other sea creatures, Reel Pizza by the village green, offering pizza and ale while you kick back in a easy chair or on a courch taking in a movie, to all fired up, where you can spent an afternoon creating your very own pottery, these are just some of the unique shops in town.

And the food is out of this world, with real clam chowder at the fish house grill (the local fishermen eat here, so you know its good), or enjoy a meal you will never forget at route 66 - you can't miss it on cottage street, with its flashing lights and half a taxi cab sticking out of the upper section of the building - the inside is filled with old stuff from years gone by.  Check out Jordans on cottage street for their famous blueberry miffins and pies, all made from Maine wild blueberries, or enjoy a beer at the thirsty whale on cottage street, where the local fisherman go and listen in on the stories they exchange.  Bar Harbor's nightlife is very colorful with bands playing at the local bars, and shops staying open until 11 at night.

Another thing to consider when coming here is that the entrance of Acadia National Park is just up the road, so you are never far from miles upon miles of hiking trails, and the 45 miles of crushed stone carriage roads, where you can bike, hike, or ride a horse (horses for rent at Wildood stables in the park), or catch a flight in an old biplane or a glider t the Bar Harbor airport and really soar high over the island and national park.  In town there is also a rock climbing school, learn how to use the gear then take to the Otter cliffs for some real climbing.  And if your really adventerous, then test your limits on the sheer faces of the Bee Hive and Precipice.  Signs warn that you could be seriously injuried or even lose your life at these two locations, so only those with experience should attempt these climbs.

And one more thing to comsider is the free Island Explrer buses.  They cover just about all points on the Island, and service most of the campgrounds, including the parks two campgrounds, Blackwoods and Seawall.  They aslo service many of the hotels as well, so hop aboard and explore the entire island by bus.  Even rent a bike in town and take it with you, each bus has a large bike rack on the front and back of the bus, so you are free to get off anywhere along the routes and explore to your hearts content.  Ready to head back to town, catch the next bus at a bus stop or wave it down, its that easy.
