Welcome to Puerto Lopez
So, we started our way to Puerto Lopez. It wouldn't be a long drive and we'd take a look at Jim's recommended hostel, so at least I'd be able to say I saw it! hahaha. It looked nice, but too far away for carrying a big backpack. Maybe next time, if I don't have heavy luggage. The drive to Puerto Lopez wasn't long and we were chatting the whole time, although I think that most of the time I was the one who was talking, hahaha. Yes, I still had things to tell, hopefully Shawn wouldn't hate my voice by the end of the journey...

We arrived to Puerto Lopez around 1:30pm. We'd park the car first and then go to the tourist info office. All the main offices, hostels / hotels and restaurants are located at the Malecon (in front of the beach), so we found everything close, also Puerto Lopez is a small town and all the action happens at the Malecon.
first lunch with Shawn - we are the eating duo!!!
We went to the tourist info center, so bad they didn't have a map and we had to go and hire a tour operator, mmm. Fortunately I did some research in advance, hehehe.

While we were walking I saw some places that were recommended on Lonely Planet and I wanted to try them, hahaha. I was looking here for places to eat and stay in Puerto Lopez, but couldn't find anything. Now there are gonna be some reviews, yay! Should we eat first? Oh well, this is something else I learned about Shawn. He's always hungry! hahaha.

Then I saw a sign "Carmita" and I told Shawn that it was part of my list of places to try and since we were already there and it was 2:20pm... actually I didn't need to say anything to convince him, hehehe. Oh! that list of places to try became his too, hahaha.
patacones soaking the cebiche juice...
I found my eating partner! The place looked nice. I'd get my 1st Cebiche in Ecuador and also my 1st beer. OMG! I've heard so much about Ecuadorian cebiche that I wanted to try it before saying anything. Ok, this is my opinion: it was good, but not as good as the Peruvian one ;) Some friends warned me about ketchup and popcorn in the cebiche, but no weird stuff here. I loved the side: "patacones" (fried plantain) and the big shrimps! What amazed me was how they serve the cebiche, in a bowl like a soup and you eat it with a spoon. The taste was ok, but I was missing the sourness. Also their aji (spicy) was more like tabasco. Anyway, the meal was different but tasty. It was good that my 1st cebiche experience was with Shawn, who's practically a local now :)

Now, it was time to look for accomodation.
this is life!
I couldn't find the places from my list and Shawn didn't remember where he stayed before. Well, maybe because it was 4 years ago! That was the quote of the day "4 years ago..." hahaha.

Hey! There was a small and nice hotel next to the restaurant. We checked it and it was a good one and we could park in front of it. We got the room at the top, which had a great view, the only problem: the stairs, well some exercise wouldn't kill us. We decided to repack our things in the small backpacks and leave the heavy ones inside the car, how smart ;)

After a quick shower we were ready to go to the beach. Along the Malecon there are kiosks that offer juices early in the morning and cocktails later. They have nice hammocks and chairs on the sand, how sweet. We'd go there later.
enjoying the sunset
The beach was different than in Montanita, maybe not as clean but less crowded. Here in Puerto Lopez, you'd be more in touch with the local people, it's not as touristy as Montanita. We found a nice spot and were just chilling out and chatting. Before it got windier he decided to go for a swim while I was trying to take advantage of the last rays of sun.

We went to one of the kiosks and sat down, enjoying the sunset and zipping a cocktail, yummy! What else can you ask for? Sunset at the beach, a cocktail in your hand, good company.... what a hard life, hahaha, well someone has to do it ;) The sunset was taking so long, so we had a second cocktail, hahaha.

It was already dark and we went back to the hotel.
what! Ketchup in my cebiche???
Before climbing the endless stairs, we got some touristy info at the lobby. There's a community we could visit next morning. Mmm, we'll see. After a refreshing and comforting shower it was time to go and look for a place for dinner, but before leaving just checked quickly my email and TB. Hey! I was featured! awesome!

Although Puerto Lopez is a small town, it's loud at night, all the kiosks along the Malecon play loud music: reggaeton, salsa, rock & reggae - what an interesting combination. We started to walk and look for a restaurant that wasn't too crowded, but at least had some people there and we found one. I got a cebiche and this one was bizarre for me. The bowl presentation didn't surprise me anymore, but seeing ketchup and mustard on top of it was shocking! I could handle the cucumber, with actually was tasty.
so cozy here...
Shawn got the shrimp's rice, which was good. Shrimps here are so tasty!!! It's perfect going eating with Shawn, we ended up sharing dishes, hahaha.

After a tasty dinner, this time we just drank sodas, we went to our former kiosk. During the evening every kiosk has a bonfire and they place chairs surrounding it, how cool! We sat down and asked for a cocktail and another and another, hahaha. We were sure not to repeat them ;) We tried several and I didn't remember all the names, but I did remember the name of the winner: " Banana Daiquiri". The only thing we were avoiding was cocktails with milk :P

It wasn't too late when we left and went to the hotel. Before going upstairs I talked to the guy at the frontdesk for some tips to visit that community "El Pital". He recommended me to call them before going, oh we'll see.

Well, it was time to go to bed, although the loud music outside - whole malecon was a party - I didn't have any problem in falling asleep :P
