Crete Day 3
September 14, 2008
Since we didn't want to go to the beach all day we decided to explore the island by car. We checked out a guidebook and the internet before we flew over to Crete and we made a list of must sees. Rethymno was one of the cities we were interested in. It's not as huge as Iraklio and what we saw on pics was very nice.
Usually it's about a 1 1/2 hours drive from Matala to Rethymno but unfortunately we got lost somewhere in the mountains. The signs were not very clear but we didn't mind. It was a nice trip through the mountains and some tiny villages and the surrounding was incredible and finally after a bit over 2 hours we reached the city.
At first we went to the venetian port which is beautiful. Not far away you find the Venetian castle called the Fortezza, one of the best preserved castles in Crete. It took us about 2 hours of sightseeing. Since it was hot as hell we were happy to cool down in some buildings like the churches or the mosque. The view from up there over the city and the ocean is amazing.
Our next destination was the old town which is almost entirely built by the venetians and it's very good preserved. Except the Great Gate (megali porta, Porta Guora), the Piazza Rimondi (Rimondi square) and the Venetian Loggia we didn't wanna see something special. Just wandering around. Enjoying a nice lunch and some cold beverages.
Around 6 p.m. we drove back to Matala for a shower and a late dinner.
