Seeing a volcano--a new first for me!
Checking out of the hotel proved to be another test of our patience. It took forever and put us behind schedule. What happened is I made the mistake of asking the hotel clerk about his floundering long distance relationship, and well, I think he was delighted to finally have someone to talk to about it with.
When we finally got inside the car I had to take a couple of very deep breaths before we began our six hour drive from Playa de Jaco to Arenal through major rain. We were not able to see much of our surroundings until we approached the city of La Fortuna and thankfully it began to clear up. This is the closest city to Volcan Arenal, which is the most active volcano in Costa Rica. The place we were staying, Arenal Observatory Lodge (www.arenalobservatorylodge.com), was at the foot of the volcano and provided the best views. To get there you had to drive along a 9KM dirt road off of the main highway. Not fun when there are floods from endless rain! We survived the adventure though and along the way the continuously smoking volcano loomed ominously in the distance while patches of tropical rain forests lined the pseudo-road. It was so exciting to see my first volcano!
We were thrilled with the Lodge, as it was a gorgeous place. Famished from a long day's drive we went to the Lodge's restaurant for a snack and while we were there we met some other Americans. We instantly became friends and decided to go into La Fortuna for dinner together.
After another disappointing dinner (warning: Costa Rica's food is not the most exciting cuisine) we bought some beers and went back to the Lodge to chill in the outdoor jacuzzi for a couple of hours. Because it had started to rain again we could not see the volcano, but we could sure hear it! The constant rumbling was a bit unnerving, however an absolutely unforgettable experience.
