Chateau tour Stop 2: Amboise

You know how every city has a "claim to fame", typically with residents? Well, Amboise is no Hollywood, but its popular residents included the last few years of Leonardo da Vinci, and more recently Mick Jagger who purchased a chateau. Despite such stellar residents (doh!), I wouldn't give this place more than 3 out of 10. For one thing, the way the tours are organised is that you get to either choose between the Chateau or the Clos-Luce (where Vinci lived, and today houses a lot of his work in engineering). I went with the Chateau. I don't want to say it was a mistake as I don't know what the Clos-Luce is like, but the chateau sure was terrible. It's a fortified chateau which means it's got all the trimmings and looks of a proper full-on fort - the moat, the tall towers, etc. But the inside is an absolute bore.
After another sunny stay here, I went with the Japanese couple for a walk around the town, and we had the best crepe and creme brulle for lunch. Seriously, this was one place where the food kind of made up for the anticlimax so far! The van would pick us up in about 2 hours or so, and so it did, with additional people who were coming for the afternoon leg of the trip.
