Zadar is reffered to by the locals as "the city". The old town we call "poluotok" - " the peninsula. Zadar's old town is placed on a peninsula, and it doesn't take long to criss-cross it. Many people have conquered it during the centuries and everyone left its trace, even in the name: ancient Jadera, illirian Idassa, roman Jader, italian Zara. During the last 15 years Zadar is living it up, the once socialistic military town that housed a dozen barracks has turned into a beautiful mediterranean, young city. New streets, buildings and parks, one of the most modern public libraries, the university, a shopping mall that attracts shoppers from all over, many venues and events (true, mostly during the summer season), far too many cars, but still - it has remained a smalltown where you don't have to push yourself through the crowd, and the biggest rush hour still allows you to get to work in time.

The city lives in a certain rhythm that goes something like this: from 8 a.m. to 1. p.m. it's crowded, the shops are open, the market is full. Main time is between 11 a.m. and noon, that's when everyone - I mean, everyone - goes out for coffee. The cafes are full, the streets are crowded, it's time to meet friends and colleagues, have a quick bite and learn about the gossip of the day. After 1 p.m. everthing calms down. Most shops close, and the city gets deserted. Untill 5 p.m. That's when the shops open again, and everyone - I mean, everyone - comes out again for the afternoon coffee, to meet friends and colleagues, have a quick bite and learn if anything new has happened to the gossip of the day.  Most shops close between 8 and 9 p.m., and that's when the city starts to empty again. During summer season, the bars, restaurants and cafes in the old town have longer opening hours, and every friday night there's a small local feast that can last all night long. Off season the cafes and bars are open till 10 p.m., and after that you will meet only a few passer-bys. Since last year we got a new cinema in the mall, which has become very popular, so that's where you will meet us in the late evening hours, and after the show in one of the bars on the same floor singing karaoke.
