"Zadre, grad u moru" – "Zadar, city in the sea" is the title of a song dedicated to the dalmatian city Zadar, and it's just one of many. So, tune in at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=easbzqmyEPk (I don't own anything) and follow me ….

Barkica

Another unique Zadar-thing: "Barkica", the "little boat" is a common means of transportation in Zadar. To get from the main land to the peninsula you can either walk (or drive) to it where the peninsula meets the main land, or take the pedestrian bridge across Jazine bay about half way of the peninsula. Or you can take a ride with the Barkica. It connects the northern part of the peninsula with the quay stretching from the main land. Here's were Jazine bay has a natural opening to the sea so the ships and ferrys can enter it. Since it's just too far to walk to the bridge, the Barkica is perfect for a set over to the other bank.  For over 800 years the "Barkarijoli", the 'drivers' of these little vessels, connect the two banks, using entirely man power, and operating at any weather. It's a traditional job of a few Zadar families who inherit the trade for generations now. Despite of all the modern technology, the Barkica has remained a popular trademark of the city unchanged for centuries.
