We take our car and with a new guide, Wang, we go north of Beijing
after crossing several rings we reach the Olympic area where we visit the Bird's nest Stadium - really impressive technological marvel
a quick lunch with a Subway sandwich (we like it) and on to the next stop: the great wall at Jinshanling. I am very happy to have made the choice to see the greta wall again in a different location. The site is wonderful, an immense stretch of the wall in a wild area, well restored, practically without tourists!! (in 2000 it was terribly crowded at Badaling) We reach the top by cable car and the weather is perfect. (see pics in the next entry)
In the afternoon we reach Chengde, where the emperors used to spend their summer.
We visit the Mountain Resort park with lakes, pagodas, and palaces ringed by a wall. In the evening we get to the hotel that - suprise - is listed as 4 stars (Quian Yand Hotel) but that is being demolished, moved to an adjacent building, and is worth maybe one star. The surrounding looks like Serajevo right after the war - they are making a new road. We are quite disapponted.
