As its Italian counterpart of Cinqueterre in Liguria, the Banyuls's vineyard is a coastal vineyard laid out in terraces producing famous wines since antiquity(Phoenicians,Greeks...).Cultivated on slopes of SCHIST stretching from the sea level until near 500 meters high, the vineyard lays mostly on grounds with strong slopes, sometimes more than 45%. The vineyard although perennial, constitutes a weak cover of the ground and the showers sometimes violent in spring and autumn, spark off an important erosion.Nevertheless the vineyard enjoys 320 days of sunshine a year!
To fight against the crushing erosion, the building of terraces (feixes) was necessary on a 10 to 20 cm thick ground.
