I reach Celano pretty late at night, and sure enough, it’s another castle-on-top-of-a-hill town… There’s no point in exploring it now… I look for a place hotel, but the one I find is overpriced, so I guess I’ll be camping out again…

I stop for a coffee and try talking to cafĂ© owner.  Finally, she looks at me and asks, “so why are you talking in Spanish?  People will understand you better if you speak to them in English!”

And I thought I was speaking in Italian… oh well…

We actually have a great discussion.  She actually grew up in Canada so she speak French as well.  We talk about people preserving their culture when they move abroad.

She has a big beef with the fact that when Catholics marry Muslims they have to convert to Islam… “Why can’t it be the other way around?” She’s also frustrated by what she perceives as the unwillingness of immigrants to blend into Italian culture…

It’s a good discussion--  nice to finally have a good chat with a local.

Actually I haven’t seen a whole lot of immigrants over these last couple of days--  I’m assuming it’s because there aren’t a whole lot of jobs up in these mountain villages…

Next morning I get up early to explore the town.  Celano is yet another really cool town with a stunning mountain backdrop to its main plaza with forest tha climbs up the mountainside and then suddenly stops…

The castle is beautiful as well… I climb all the way to the very top where the village ends and the forest begins… then back down again…
