Soon the train is chugging its way up the mountain, through tunnels and over bridges… And suddenly a magnificent sight… An ancient city perched in the top on a cliff overlooking a vast valley… with a waterfall cascading down over on the side!

It was love at first sight…

Tivoli will actually end up ranking higher on the “awesome scale” then Rome--  because it’s completely unexpected… I had pretty high expectation for Rome--  but no idea what I would find in Tivoli

I quickly get off the train and hurry down to check out the town.

First of all I want to check out the waterfall.  But rather than pay to hike down to the base of the fall, I figure I could get my best shot by just following the road around the mountain bend.  The only problem is that these Italian mountain roads are very pedestrian unfriendly… You’ve got a cliff on one side and a wall on the other and absolutely no room to maneuver… so with heavy traffic it’s a bit of a treacherous hike to the other side… But I make it and take a couple of good shots…

Then I figure that instead of going back the same, maybe I can find a path down to the bottom of the canyon and then up the other side… It’s worth a try--  but I’ll really be pissed at myself if I end up having to backtrack the whole way…

After the hike…

I reach Tivoli once again towards evening up an abandoned road through an olive grove. I soon find myself in a lively park and plaza with a magnificent view of the valley.  It seems like every young person in Tivoli comes to hang out in this plaza…

Darkness is setting fast, so I hurry up the road to check out a castle--  maybe take a videoclip before it get’s dark.

It’s a beautiful little castle with four round turrets in excellent shape.  I walk all the way around and find an entrance to an area of Roman ruins with an amphitheatre and all… and no one guarding the gates!

And there I take one of my favourite castle clips…

After clambering around the ruins for a while, I head down to explore the town.  It seems that, while the young folk hang out in the plaza, the older folk prefer to stroll up and down the ancient alleyways.  Deeper into the city and the alleys get narrower and darker until they have an eerie medieval feel to them…

Tivoli really has it all… waterfall, great view, castle, ruins, lively vibe, eerie medieval alleys…

I wander around for a while, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying pizza by the slice and Italy’s famous ice cream… It’s been a great 3rd day in Italy
