Next day… I’ve still got a full day to explore Scotland and this time I’m going to take a different approach:  I’m going to buy one of them one day city bus passes and see if I can get out to a couple of little Scottish towns this way…

So I get my bus pass and hop on a random bus.  This bus only goes winding through an industrial area and stops at a big shopping mall out on the west side, so no luck there… But I do find a nice little walking path along the highway so I can continue on through the countryside on foot…

It’s not all that interesting, so I decide to hop on another bus and see where it’ll take me…

This bus takes me as far as Ratho, which gives me my first taste of a Scottish village.

But Ratho is more than just a village--  it’s a canal village where stone from nearby quarries was loaded on to narrow barges and hauled down to Edinburgh… Still local residents enjoy travelling up and down the waterway in old fashioned canal boats, while other mud splattered locals ride mountainbikes up and down the canal edge…

It’d be fun to hike back to Edinburgh along the canal, but I decide to catch the bus instead and go explore another suburb.

Nicely surprised here in Ratho… you don’t come to Scotland expecting to see canals…
