Next morning I still have a full day before my next bus… and I decide to start it out by exploring Mestre, where I stayed the night.

Whether or not to consider Mestre a separate city is to be debated.  Mestre is part of the “Commune de Venezia” so it’s technically sort of part of the city.  But Mestre is so completely separate from Venice, geographically and  culturally that it just does not seem right to call it one city.  I mean nobody’s going to go to Mestre and claim “I visited Venice”…

Mestre has a pleasant “town” feel, with folks heading to and from work on bicycles down the back streets.

Near downtown there’s a bustling open air market street where folks are buying food for their lunch.  I find something particularly charming about the Italian language--  to me it sounds like a very classy, musical Spanish dialect… And people are so expressive and animated in their conversations with each other.  I definitely need to spend more time exploring Italy…

I loop around to a wide, airy plaza lined with a few cafes, and down to check out an ancient,  well restored castle tower… Looks like Mestre has a bit of history of its own.

Enjoying my more relaxing Mestre experience, I continue on east to see what else there is… I reach the edge of town and decide to keep going a little further, across the freeway…

I soon find myself in another small “village center” of sorts… I figure I’ve reached another town, so I wander around to explore it a bit… But when I finally ask someone where I am, he tells me I’m still in Mestre…

The countryside isn’t all that interesting, it’s very hot and humid… and who knows how far I’ll have to walk before I reach another town… So finally I decide to head on back…
