Hostels ain’t what they used to be.  Here at the H.I. hostel patio of Lyon, instead of scruffy backpackers washing their underwear by hand and passing a joint around, everybody nowadays is busy at his laptop.  Even in the room, a couple of the guys are watching movies on their Toshibas and Compaqs…

I do chat with a French history teacher who is on vacation, he gives me a bit more background on the history of this area and some pointers of places to see.

I head on out the next morning, wander around Vieux Lyon a bit more--  I’m particularly intrigued by the ruins of an old church that has been traced back to Roman times…

Then I head east, across both river, through the more modern section of Lyon, and on to the immigrant neighborhoods on the eastside.  Then, in a blink of an eye, I’m in Villeurbaine, a section of Lyon that’s technically another city.

That’s fine, I’ll take the extra point…

Nothing really special about it… it’s got it’s interesting ethnic shops and an shady central commercial area… Not much history to it--  but it does have an impressive, modern Mairie…

I continue on my way…
