I play my clip in front on a bench in front of a beautiful stone house--  worried that I might not find a better spot before dark and head to downtown Franconville.  Here I find the best French invention since the bra… a free, self cleaning toilet!  As soon as you leave, the whole room gets sprayed down and disinfected…

I don’t know for a fact that it’s a French invention, but it’s definitely a great service, especially for guys like me who don’t like to spend money to use the bathroom… yet don’t care for using filthy public toilets either…

As most of the other towns I’ve visited in the evening, Franconville is completely dead after dark--  except for one Japanese restaurant… Even the bars are closed!   It seems a bit strange, especially in the middle of the summer… you’d think people would be out and about late at night like they are in other countries like Spain or Morocco… but apparently that’s just not how things work in small French towns… And this is Friday night…

I guess I kind of had the idea that, come evening, I could wander around any town here and find lively bars, café’s with live music--  maybe I could land a few impromptu gigs… But that’s clearly not going to happen in a town like Franconville…

Are these towns beautiful? Yes… do they have character and personality? Yes… are they worth visiting? Yes… Just… not really good places to play music for an audience…

Many of these town will have posters listing the events going on in that town during the summer--  sort of competing with each other as “the best summer town”… but so far I haven’t been too lucky in experiencing these events…

So I wander the quiet streets of Franconville a bit more, and then head off to the forest to find a place to camp…
