So wet they named it after the north of England

Well we arrived in New York on 28th July, so that we would have a full day following for Kara's birthday. Checked into a very pleasant hostel on the Lower East Side of Manhattan near Little Italy and Chinatown. Little Italy is very little and Chinatown seems to have pushed the boundaries a little. Basically it chucked it down all day in a terrific thunderstorm. Had to chuckle at the poor folks on the open top tour bus as we huddled under the canopy outside Dunkin' Donuts (Kara's birthday treat!). We had been hunting for the Empire State building, the magnificent icon of New York...so magnificent in fact that we walked straight past it without noticing. Went back and tried to get some photos none the less with me running into the road in the pouring rain dodging yellow cabs.
The 30th saw sunshine, and we went to Central Park; catching some softball and having a hotdog to tick the box. We also popped into Grand Central station, which I was interested to see as it's been used in some great films. (e.g. Closing scenes of Carlito's Way).
