Well what can I say so far?  Utter chaos.  It’s been comforting in a perverse kind of way to see a few nationals also being a little confused.  Their advantage was of course that they could ask someone and understand the answer.  I could ask, but then we’d be taken somewhere by someone who obviously wanted some kind of pay off.  Choice: not pay or pay, but then how much?  Then, where to get off the bus to get the connection.

Anyway, this is after our journey from Cartagena to Santa Marta.  A rather hot, and with reference back to the Lonely Planet; the wrong bus to the bus terminal.  Took longer and was muy sweaty.  We were dropped off before the terminal and ushered towards a car in a petrol station (a collectivo we later concluded) which was asking $50.000 ($=peso).

Current exchange rates

approx 1.800: US$1

approx US$1.62 : £1

Didn’t go with the collectivo as a little green and sounded a lot of money (may have been per person of course) and eventually got charged 50 for the two of us on the bus.  Check your ticket as it only said 40.  Then got bumped in Baranquilla to another bus (which reeked of petrol and then ran out of the same shortly before Santa Marta.  Met a lovely girl on the bus who spoke some English helped us out a great deal, even phoning her mum for advice!

SO here we are in the Casa Familiar.  Everything is costing 25%+more than the LP says, partly exchange, partly inflation?

Fiesta here in Santa Marta, so shower and out.
