Checked out the old and new towns. New town really wasn't up to much, although if you want to go out, this is where you have to go, being careful not to be mugged of course. Taxis everywhere after dark in this town.
We visited the Basilica Voto Nacional and had great fun climbing the towers up ladders and the like...not for the faint hearted! You can even climb outside on a rather precarious ledge if you so desire. Not sure anyone's done a risk assessment on that! Excellent!
Went to the classic Quito photo opportunity of Plaza de San Francisco, which we took a photo of. Popped into the museum, but it was pretty boring unfortunately unless you're very very into religious art. No real history of the place. One saving grace was the carved wooden features in the church upstairs. No photos allowed.
Having had fun climbing the Basilica, we decided to give Rucu Pinchincha a go having acclimatised in Quito for a couple of days. Was quite difficult walking up at that altitude and we spent 3hrs heading up. We didn't quite make the summit as the weather suddenly came in covering the top in thick cloud and the temperature plunged. The walk back down was much easier! If you want to try this start as early as you can to get up before the weather closes in (as it does every day).
