This is the place where I live and used to work, after moving here when I was 9 years old

Hellevoetsluis: an introduction

The old mill

I moved to Hellevoetsluis at the age of 9 after living in a flat in Schiedam, my birthtown. I was sad at first to leave, after all I had my friends there and it was in the middle of the school year (november 1984). But once in my new hometown, I settled in very quickly, made new friends and enjoyed my time at school.

We get many tourists during the spring and summer months, because we have the beach at the Haringvliet River and approximately 10 to 15 minutes by car we have the beaches at the North Sea. We also have 6 places where you can stay, 2 campings, 2 hotels and 2 resorts.

The places worth to visit are our harbour and our fortress, known as "De Vesting". It contains a recently renovated old dry dock and dockyard facilities, as well as some museums, including the National Firefighting Museum and "Gesigt van 't Dok" museum. We also have a lighthouse and corn mill in the same, so during a walk you can see it all.

As for going out, we have several restaurants and bars in "De Vesting" and during the summer season, the many terraces are open in the busy harbor. Outside "De Vesting" there are also several very good restaurants. For shopping, we have 1 big shopping center called "De Struytse Hoeck", where I once worked in a cd store.

I'll be updating this blog occasionally with new photos and stories. Welcome to my town! :D
