México-Panamá Gold Cup game!!!
I went to Houston to attend the México-Panamá soccer game for the world cup. I had never been to a game in this type of tournaments neither had I ever seen the mexican national team play, so I knew it would be fun. I drove all the way from Ruston to Houston (5 1/2 hr drive), it was ok, but I got a speeding ticket in Tenaha, and I wasn't even speeding! I dunno if I should try to go to court... I don't think I have a chance vs the officer... I was a little annoyed about this.
Well then I arrived to a restaurant where I had agreed to meet with a fellow travelmate from couchsurfing, he had allowed me to "surf his coach" for the night. He is a very cool guy, I noticed from the very first moment since we met. We went then to his house for a little while and then to the stadium I was very impressed by the size of the Reliant Stadium in Houston and I was even more impressed when we got in!!! It's really amazing.
Everything inside is so modern and tidy. It is a covered stadium so we didn't have any problem with the sunshine. The grass of the field, OMG it was perfect. I also noticed there were no lines from american football, they did a great job adjusting it to a soccer field.I couldn't find anybody selling T-shirts from the mexican team, that was a shame. But at least I had my flag to cheer the team when they arrived. We first saw the Guadalupe-Nicaragua game which wasn't as boring as I was expecting it to be. Guadalupe displayed some nice soccer skills and won 2-0 in a very well deserved manner. Then everything was ready for Mexico and Panama to show in the field!
The anthem of FIFA started on the main sound and everybody cheered. Both teams arrived in the court and were announced.
The anthem of Mexico was first. It was thrilling! I had never sang the anthem with so many other mexicans!! It was amazing. Then the game started people started making the "wave" immediatly. Mexico scored rather quickly and people jumped out of their seats cheering... it was so exciting! But then Panama scored... :( and shut up the whole stadium for a moment. The second half of the game was interesting and exciting as well, and there was even some fight between mexican and panaman players, the game was hot. Unfortunately Mexico could not score the second goal that would have given us victory. I have to say that I really enjoyed the experience... never been in an event like this before but I look forward to do it again in the future!
