Sukhotai
January 30, 2006
We are now in Sukhotai, about 400km north of Bangkok. We took a train
from Hualumphong Station in Bangkok to the evocatively named Pisanulok,
and then a song thaew to Sukhotai, where we are staying at No 4
Guesthouse.
Old Sukhotai ruins
January 30, 2006
Today we bicycled around the ruins of old Sukothai, which was a capital
of Thailand prior to the Ayuthaya period. There are many temples and
old Buddhas, including an enormous seated Buddha nearly 15m tall and an
old Hindu sanctuary -- apparently the Sukhotai Buddhists were not
sensitive about having temples to other religions in their holy areas.
There were very few other tourists around -- always a plus.
NetClub internet in Sukhotai is on the main road, opposite the 711 and "Poo Bar" & "Chopper", on the other side of the river from the main town offers fast Internet, cheap CD burning, and uses Debian Linux machines (for those Linux enthusiasts). Each machine also has USB ports... very convenient. Price 40Bht / hr, minimum 5 Bht.
