Seaturtles!

Galibi Travel Blog › entry 11 of 28 › view all entries

From 6-29 June I went to Suriname. My father had been telling me how great it is so I had to see it myself.

Seaturtles!

Time for my first multi-day trip. Galibi beaches are one of the most important seaturtles nesting sites in the world. The natives protect them and make a profit of tourism to ensure the two villages on the beach are thriving. Still there are only few tourists (fortunately). The only way to get there is to take a boat in Albina, depending on the condition of the road at least a 3 hour drive from Paramaribo. From Albina it's about 1,5 hour by boat to Galibi. Those Leatherback turtles are just huge, over 500 kgs! But the best thing is to see the young turtles hatch and head out to see.

Unfortunately I have no pictures of the turtles, the best time to see them is after dark, and unfortunately it was clouded so there was no light at all except a bit from a flashlight.
