Nieuw Amsterdam
June 10, 2009
After a few days getting used to the weather and the slower pace it was time for a first excursion to the former plantation district of Commewijne. Fort Nieuw Amsterdam was built between 1734 and 1747 to defend the plantations from invaders like the English. Not very successfull though, it was overrun many times.
There are still a lot of big guns to be seen, from colonial times aswell from WW2. The houses are among the oldest in Suriname. Alltogether a beautiful place.
