Pot luck picnic at the park
July 5, 2009
The first time for me to meet a group of Travbuddies, Rob organized a pot luck picnic at the Amsterdam Vondelpark, a perfect location, which brought back sweet memories to me.
Because this was a pot luck, I decided I would go on bike, that way I did not have to carry the bags with food and such - after all I got those big newspaper bags which can hold an awful lot of stuff. (At the end of the day I realized that if I had used public transport it would have taken me more time to get there).
So after a ride on both bike and ferry, and sniffing the the good old downtown Amsterdam atmosphere (LOL) I got at the park, where Rob put up a sign indicating the TB meet-up spot.
Very nice spot next to one of the park ponds.
There was plenty of food (even more than we could eat), some of the people played frisbee, moorhens and coots were at the pond, the coots learning their young ones to dive for their own food, I tried to draw something, but could not set my mind to it, it was all so vivid - a typical sunny Sunday afternoon at Vondelpark.
Some people had to leave later that afternoon, but quite a bunch stayed and chatted some more, and there was still plenty of food left.
At the end of the afternoon it became a bit overcast and because the weatherforcast said something about rain and thunder later that day I decided I would go home before the bad weather would strike. But it was so nice, so instead of hopping on the bike right away I stayed for another half hour or so to chat. Good idea? Bad idea? I don't know, the people were nice so it was a good idea. The rain started before I even got out of the Vondelpark so it was a bad idea. However.... after all, the only thing what could happen was that I became wet, and that is exactly what happened - I was pedaling still at the Jordaan area where I was already soaked.
Found shelter under a bridge near the station, and after awhile the rain stopped and when I got home most of my clothes were dry again. Sun got out of its hiding, which added a golden shine to that day.
