Beginning of the car trip
For Lori's stay I had organised for us to spend a weekend in beautiful Margaret River, possible my favourite place in the world. Lori and I were to drive down on the Friday and Warren and his friends would meet us after work that night. So Lori and I packed up the car and drove towards Margaret River, with a few destinations in mind. We wanted to stop off at the Metricup Bird Park. I pulled onto Metricup Road and discovered that the park was 'closed' Fridays! Bugger! Nevermind, we could stop off there on our way back home on Sunday.
We drove on and had a quick pull over when I spotted some cows in a paddock that reminded me of the Hairy Cuws in Scotland. They weren't quite the same, but still - very cute.
Lori and I lookin sexy in our headphones!
We continued to our next destination - the Candy Cow! This is the highlight of Cowaramup
, a little candy/fudge factory. It is brilliant. Every type of lollie and fudge with taste tests! We bought ourselves a few goodies, got a tourist map from the shop and drove on. We were looking for Mammoth Cave. We needed to get onto Caves Road so taking a side road, we eventually turned on to the notorious road. Its is a beautiful winding, slightly hilly road which has claimed a few lives over the years. It is a very scenic drive however and I enjoyed it.
We turned into the entrance for Mammoth Cave and bought our tickets. The southern region of Western Australia is home to many caves which can be easily explored.
We were given our little tour devices and headphones and walked through the entrance. It is amazing, all the different formations of stalagmites and stalagtites, some meeting in the middle to form crystalized columns. We walked around and climbed many stairs, which lead up tp viewing platforms. After we'd spent awhile admiring the cave and listening to our phone guide we found the exit and began the steep descent out of the cave. The cave actually travels underground and you start on one side of Caves Road, and exit out on the opposite side. Caves Road is built on top of many caves, hence the name. On exiting Mammoth Cave you realise you are climbing out of a crater, its this massive hole in the earth, surrounded by trees and forest. Thankfully it was found and made a tourist attraction before some poor hiker fell in! It really is a beautiful attraction of the South West, along with Jewel, Nilgi and Lake cave.
Surfers Point, Prevelly
Once we'd climbed out way out, and gotten back to my car, we realised we were starving so headed into Margaret River for lunch and to pick up the keys for our little townhouse we'd hired. We went to Sails cafe which serves beautiful food and had a huge lunch there, sitting in the sun outside. We collected our details from the Tourist Info Centre and found our little house which was just off the main road in town. Perfect.. easy walking distance from the pub! We decided to dump our stuff at the house then head down to Prevelly to check out the beaches and the surf.
Prevelly is the area on the coast near Margaret River, with lots of cute beachhouse/mansions. We drove up to Surfers Point and then the River Mouth, getting out to take a big walk along the beach.
At the River Mouth
It was a really pretty day, cloudy everynow and then but the sun was doin its best! We enjoyed traipsing along the sand, watching the surf breaking and the surfers chasing the waves. Lori seemed very content and seemed to fall in love with the place, or maybe just Oz in general. We turned around to head back to the car and back into town.
We went and bought some goodies from the supermarket, including a cake, party hats etc has it had been Warrens birthday the day before! We loved our little house, it was so quaint with lots of rooms and little courtyard with a BBQ. We selected our room, dumped our stuff, cracked a beer and watched Bridget Jones Diary. It was only 4pm and the crew from Perth wouldnt be arriving til about 8 or 9 pm.
Catchin a pint down the tav
We got a lil tipsy drinking beers and when the movie finished we decided it was time to hit the pub. So we walked in, got a table by the fire and started doin rounds, pints of beer. There were a group of guys nearby who were speaking in accents who we immediately assumed to be Irish. At one point Lori and I made bets so she asked them where they were from, at which point they laughed and admitted they'd been puttin on the accents and were simply locals. Hahaha, whoops. Our slightly blurred senses had gotten that one wrong! We ended up chattin with them and moved into the pub/bar area. I don't know how long we we there or chatting it was a good while because Warren and co didn't turn up til abt 10.30pm! By that time, Lori and I were pretty drunk, having consumed a lot of beer. It was great to finally see Warren, Eddie, Astrid and Anna again, and the two I hadn't met, Tara and Danny.
Ditching our locals we headed back to the house eventually, trying to keep Warren outside while we donned party hats and lit candles on the cake. It was a big laugh, I mutilated the cheese cake when I tried to cut it and we all had a good time. We put Fight Club on, in which I could appreciate how hot Brad Pitt was... but too drunk to follow the story. So Lori and I went to bed to pass out. It had been a great day in Margs!!
