Rab is an Island off the Croatian coast in the northern Adriatic sea. We arrived here by ferry after boarding it in the town of Reijka and having a lovely two hour journey down the coast.
Our arrival at Rab was greeted by an old man wanting us to come and stay at his house, and for 10 euros a pop we thought why not. We'd met up with an American guy (aaron) in Piran who'd joined us on the trip to Rab, he stayed with us and the old man.
The town of Rab, much like Piran was a beautiful little town with Marble streets and old architecture. It has a very Italian feel as it was under Venetian rule (along with much of the Dalmatian coast) for several hundred years. The town has many old churches and an old bell tower you can climb to look out over the town.
Rab is said to be the best island in the northern adriatic and it was well set up for a huge influx of tourists at peak season. As usual we missed the peak season and the place was almost empty. Pretty happy about that as it would be a very mad place with bus loads of Germans everywhere.
The afternoon we got there was a great day for an afternoon swim and drink. We found a little bar along the concrete beach and went for a dip. The water around these parts is fantastic, its so blue and clear, not so warm at this time of year, but when the sun is shinning, you've just got to do it. Waited at the bar till sunset then went and got done over in restaurant where we hadn't quite worked out the Croatian exchange rate yet. It was fun anyway.
The next day was supposed to be a bike hire and ride around the island day. Rain ruined that, but we hoped on the bus and went for a trip to the town of Lopad over the other side of the island. We arrived at Lopad and it started bucketing down. A quick walk between showers, a hot chocolate and we were back on the bus towards Rab Town. The weather actually fined up a bit towards the arvo, so back in the water we were.
A final night with the old man and we headed off for Plitvice National Park on the 0530 bus.
