my school trip to Croatia

Croatia (03.04.2009 - 30.04.2009)

Previous history:

Like many schools, we had a school trip this year. After discussing a lot about the actual destination of our one-week excursion, we decided to go to Pula, Croatia as all the other suggestions such as Malta, Tuscany, Portugal, Greece etc. were forbidden by the school administration.

Everybody in my class really enjoyed an awesome trip and it was obvious that we all were sad being back in cold Germany.

Pula (24.04.2009)

One day after we arrived in Pula, we set out to see the town. We walked from the Hotel Pula for about half an hour to reach the city centre where we started our sightseeing tour. Every student had prepared a presentation about one building, so we had like one expert for every “famous” building in the town.

We have seen the Arch of the Sergii, the house of popular Irish author James Joyce, the amphitheatre; and basically the whole town itself since it’s really tiny.

After arriving at the hotel again in the evening, we immediately went to the closest store in which we became regular customers during the week cuz we spent every day in there to buy beer, sparkling wine, liver sausage out of the can, bread and much more beer (we loved Heineken!) – we later then put all the drinks in a full bath tub of cold water to cool the drinks.

The first night we didn’t do much because we were tired from walking so much all day long. We just sat together, had a few cigarettes and beers together and then went to our rooms where I fell asleep watching strip poker on DSF^^ - it was funny cuz at night we all woke up together and somehow realized that strip poker was still on.

Ocean School in Pula (25.04.2009)

This day we went to an ocean school, which was about ten minutes away from our hotel. But of course Mr. Hussong (a geography teacher!!!) couldn’t read the map and so we ended up walking for about half an hour until we found the ocean school.

The day was really nice like the day before. The sun was shining and it was quite warm for April. After learning about the different areas close to the sea and the creatures that have their natural habitat there, we had a break in which most of us went to a pizzeria. Afterwards we went back to the ocean school where we changed into neoprene suits cuz almost everybody in the course wanted to go snorkelling! :) Dang, I really loved it! Especially when Mr.

Hussong and I snorkelled closer to the other side of the coast and the rocks under water came closer. I almost panicked as a fish appeared in front of me^^ … but I guess it had more fear of me than the other way around lol

Later we went back to the hotel, played volleyball, took a shower, went to the store again to get more alcohol and then after dinner we met up again to go to the beach. It was a wonderful night! You could see the stars in the sky and hear the sound of the waves. I remember me missing Debbie so incredibly much that I later even prank called her and we ended up talking for quite a long time… too bad she couldn’t have been there with me!

Another interesting thing was that after a while a boat was coming closer to the beach. It started flashing at us repeatedly! The boat came closer and stopped at about 15 meters from the beach and we all were confused and even a bit scared. Therefore, we decided to go back to the hotel. On our way back, a group of neo-Nazi-looking guys bumped into us – this was like the freakiest night ever ;)

Pula + Beach (26.04.2009)

CNN is a nice way to wake up in the morning.

As for me, I turned on the TV every morning to hear the lovely (American) voice of the good-looking female newsreader. I gave up counting how often I compared the British accent with the English one and I could not stop thinking of my English friend that I seemed to like more and more with every phone call and every day. I even caught myself wishing to be soon back home. All I wanted was chatting with her again all night long, as we did the week before I flew to Croatia. However, I was distracted more than enough due to the entire program we had during our stay in Pula.

It took us again about half an hour to reach the city centre, where we then started the second part of our sightseeing tour through Pula. It was again a nice day and only a few clouds were in the sky. We heard presentations about the temple of Augustus and the city hall (which was my presentation), both located at the Forum Square.

Later when I saw my teacher, we talked about going to the beach again. I complained that the pool at the hotel was still closed and Mr. Hussong said I could therefore go into the sea. He joked as the sea had a temperature of about 12-13° Celsius! In the end Marcel, Jonas and I went into the sea for eight minutes and won the bet that we would make it to stay at least five minutes in the cold water. Dang, it was truly f***ing cold! And I was even about to leave the water, but telling myself all the time that it was okay kinda helped – plus, I wanted to show the boys that I can also stand stuff like that ;D Never thought the water would be so salty… but well, I took a shower afterwards and everything was okay again :)

We spent the night again with lots of alcohol.

Ps: I even found a picture of the beach close to our hotel that we went to at night and where we went “swimming”.

Brijuni National Park (27.04.2009)

On Monday, we went to the Brijuni National Park.

It was a funny day, as our guide, Pranka, was presenting EVERYTHING that exists on that little island – even the 10th hole of the golf course with 18th holes!

Here a link about the national park:

We first had to take a boat to get to the national park. I never thought that there would be so many free-roaming dogs in Croatia! Therefore, it was no wonder that we soon made a new friend: Achmed, the dog. He loved us! He even wanted to go with us on the boat but Julia kicked him off… poor doggy.

On our guided tour through the national park, Annett told me she felt sorry with that old lady who was always left behind and therefore missing Pranka presenting all the things. I then went straight to the old lady and asked her if she mind us keeping her company. She seemed all happy and was really open, told us that she was 90 years old and from Vienna. I so love old people – could cuddle ‘em!^^

After a while we became more and more keeping company with the old woman which forced Pranka to wait with her presentation. Everybody was looking weird at us as our whole class was now walking veryyyyy slow next to the old lady. I loved it! Felt so good to see the other people in the group started realizing that old people are important as well! They later started talking to her and I think we all felt like we did something good that day.

Wine tasting in the ghetto (28.

04.2009)

On this day, we didnt do very much. Only went to a small village where we got lost. We were on our way to a wine tasting and met a group of drunken men telling us to come and celebrate together with them. They said their wine was much cheaper lol

We were surprised when we found the wine store, because the house and the village created an odd dichotomy together! Nevertheless, we had a lot of fun tasting the three glasses of wine (and I was lucky cuz they mainly serves dry wines and not sweet ones as the majority in class would have liked it ;)

Bale + Rovinj (29.04.2009)

Waking up and moving your ass out of bed was probably one of the hardest things of the day, as we stayed up late drinking, smoking, chatting, singing or doing some other shit.

I remember falling asleep in the bus to the medieval village Bale and banging together with Sarah’s head as my head tilted to the side when I fell asleep. Man, that so hurt! Lol

However, Bale was a waste of time! – especially for a group of students that comes from an area where medieval buildings can be found everywhere.

We had to spend a bit of time there though as the bus system in Croatia isn’t very extended.

In the afternoon, we then went to Rovinj, a beautiful tourist town in which the prices were even in Euro. We spent a bit of time on seeing the town and then had free time which we spent in the sun close to the sea. The park close to the town is the perfect place to relax! And it’s incredible how clear the water in Croatia is!!! :)  These were like the two best relaxing hours we had during the whole stay.

Another thing I should mention is that sea gulls were crapping on us! Tina got crapped in her cleavage and Julia sat down into crap. And later we were just all scared of these gulls and had a lot of respect

In the evening, we had another “room-party” where we drank n smoked together. Thanks God we always used the boy’s room cuz it was stinking so much afterwards! It was fun cuz we got super drunk and played volleyball in the dark and started singing on the balcony.

One guy even played the guitar – those poor old people that slept above our rooms^^

Anyway, Jonas got super drunk! He even fell down the balcony n hit his face lol
I just remember Kai coming into our room, all panicked and asking what to do. I just told him to bring Jonas to the toilet as that’s the only real help when you feel sick: just puke n you’re gonna feel so much better lol

Later Mr. Hussong and Ms. Schleiden were looking for Jonas but couldn’t find him. Well, they sort of knew that he was in the bathroom puking but they didn’t say anything.

Last day in Pula (30.04.2009)

The next day we had our punishment for being drunken the day before. We walked for a long time along the sea but none of the ones that partied was really bothered cuz the air was really good for our headaches… only the ones that didn’t party with us were complaining and moaning about the walking.

After the “punishment-walk” we went to a fort on the top of a hill. He looked around, took some pictures and went back to the city when it started raining. Oh I so hate rain!!! Arriving at the hotel I was so wet that I even had to blow dry my shoes!

We stayed in the hotel until dinner and then went to the airport.

Everybody was pissed off cuz we loved this trip so much. It was sad being back home. Maybe we will go back to Croatia next year after the Abitur?!
