Gerbeaud and Cafe Karma
May 25, 2009
After the long day to the puszta, we decided to meet at the Vaci Utca during the evening. While there we wanted to stop off at Gerbeaud (another on the list of top 10 things to do in Budapest). Gerbeaud is one of the most famous cafes in Budapest. It was built in the 1850's and was well known to be the spot for the affluent and well to do. If you take a walk inside of Gerbeaud, you will see intricate wood carved furniture, table tops that are marble, red velvet curtains and chandeliers. You can definitely sense the wealth here. At the glass counter you will see all of the wonderful deserts, from cookies, to truffles, hand made chocolates and mini cakes, some of the dessert looked more like art than food. Everything looked so delicious and capable of putting you into a diabetic coma.
We got an outdoor table and after looking through the menu and decided to have dessert before dinner. We ordered two ice cream sundaes, one chocolate and the other strawberry. We all wanted our own but decided to share them. YUM. Such a good idea. Both were delicious with plenty of chocolate sauce and whipped cream to make us all happy. Since this place is world famous, the prices are comparable to it's popularity, so be prepared to put out some cash here. It's expensive but the experience is worth it.
After having such a decadent appetizer, we decided we needed to go for a walk. We walked over to Franz Liszt square which is a good mile to mile and a half away. Not far enough to use up all the calories we consumed but good enough. We got a table at Café Karma, one of our favorite places. Again for a Monday night the outdoor area was well occupied. We had dinner, order way too many beers and sat here for the rest of the night.
On the way back to the hotel, we stopped and took some great pictures of the Chain Bridge. The Bridge is beautiful at night. The lights shine on the stone fascade and really makes it quite spectacular.
