The Danube Bend
May 24, 2009
After the visit to Szentendre, we followed the Danube for another hour or so through some beautiful forest and farmland and got to Esztergom. This was once the capital of Hungary and now serves as the religious capital of the country. The Esztergom Basilica is the main attraction in this little town as it is the largest Catholic Church in the country. It’s also known as the Szent Istavan ter on Castle Hill. The admission is free and a walk around the inside is a must do. The church’s architecture is in a neoclassical style and the dome is quite spectacular. Explore the inside for a while admiring the extravagance and the beauty of it all.
Just as nice is to walk around the church. It is on the hillside so across the Danube River and there are fantastic views of Slovakia. I was fortunate to have wonderful weather so the view took me for miles and miles. The grounds are quite lush with different statues to learn about and the grounds were beautiful. There are also men in medieval costumes who will pose with you for a small donation.
