VOUGEOT,a village world renowned for its WINES!

The Château of Clos de Vougeot

Vougeot is a very small village of Burgundy, situated between Dijon and Beaune, home to a CHATEAU (castle) and a vineyard called CLOS DE VOUGEOT.The Château  consisting first in a chapel and farm buildings was constructed in the 12th century by Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Citeaux in need of WINE for mass and also as offerings. In 1551 the primitive buildings were completed by rebuilding and enlarging ancient architectures in Renaissance style.

There are impressive remains of the twelfth century farm buildings:

-the cellar from the middle of the twelfth century built to house more than 2000 casks
-the cuverie,a cloister in which the pressing and vinification took place displays 4 gigantic and ancient oak wine presses
-the vaulted kitchen from the 16th century with its huge fireplace

The Château du Clos Vougeot is the seat since 1944 of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin,an exclusive club of Burgundy wine lovers who publicize burgundy wine and gather here each November.
