In 1950,the founders and organisers of The Confrèrie des Chevaliers du Tastevin decided in order to guarantee the success of the Burgundy wines of the best quality that they promoted to distinguish them after a rigourous examination, the TASTEVINAGE ,by a seal of quality, the TASTEVIN STAMP.
The Tastevinage sessions, organised by the Brotherhood, take place twice a year in spring and autumn in the Château de Clos de Vougeot where over 250 tasters from the elite of wine connoisseurs gather and after a rigorous selection process,a blind testing the Burgundy wines that correspond precisely to their appellation and their vintage are granted by the stamp of the Confrèrie, the Tastevin stamp.
The Tastevin stamp is reliable based on the quality of the wine in one particular vintage not just on the Terroir or the location of the vineyard from where the grapes originate. It is a reliable way of knowing the quality of a Burgundy wine just by looking at the label! The Tastevinage stamp is the Confrèrie's coat of arms, work of the famous Alsacian draugthsman Hansi. On the label of the approved bottles by the Confrèrie there is now a Braille inscription in order to help the visually-impaired.
The Tastevin plaques with a different colour for each year are presented to the selected wine-growers.One can now easily recognize those producers having at least one wine aprroved by the Confrèrie.
