overpriced downtown hostel
Meyerbeer is rated pretty high on hostel sites and I find it's mostly without a reason. The location was good but far from perfect - you're still close to the beach and the beachfront restaurants but pretty far from the centre - the port, the nice restaurants, the tramline - it's all a decent 15 minute walk away.
In terms of service, the staff was most helpful. Questions were answered briefly and we were allowed into the room before the check-in time, which helped a lot. Note however, that carrying heavy bags will quickly become noticeable as there's a couple of flights of stairs just to the lobby and a few more to where the rooms are. And the elevator does not stop at the floors occupied by the hotel.
Now for the bed - no common area to speak of, the WiFi is so-so, the streets must get cleaned daily at night and the windows don't drown out the sounds properly, resulting in a not-so-nice early wake up call. There are no amenities, no breakfast, no extras of any sort. Therefore I'd suggest staying somewhere else unless you've specific reason to stay here.
