The city of Deventer is one of the seven "Hanze cities", located on the riverbanks of the ijssel. The other cities are Doesburg, Zutphen, Hattem, Zwolle, Kampen and Hasselt. The name "Hanze" was started during the 15th century, a chain of cities along the river came together to do business.
Deventer is still a beautiful city with an old town center, historical and modern buildings. Around the old center you will find the old single canal with the bird island in the middle. A very nice tiny island with several species of birds. Like a very pigheaded peacock, who opens his feathers but turned his front away from me and my camera. In the old town center you can go for shopping, meals and drinks and museums.
You can enter Deventer by train, from the train station you can go straight into the old city center, if you come by car, follow the signs to the centrumgarage, into the center of the city. You pay 1 euro for 40 minutes up to a max of 8 euro per day. The garage is open 24/7. If you park you're car here you can use for free a bicycle or rent a umbrella for 3 euro per day.
Every year Deventer goes back to the time of Charles Dickens. 900 people play the people like scrooge, Oliver twist and mr pickwick. This year it will be held on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 of December 2010.
