The moat around the Himeji castle

I head out of town from Hiroshima to go to another big city in Japan - though it is not quite as famous as Hiroshima. I don’t really think I know anybody at home who can place Okayama on a map. I get off the train and I need to find somewhere to stay - I love the tourist information’s places spread all over the country where they will help you find somewhere close to the station at a reasonable price - so I head into the tourist information on the station. Unfortunately they work a bit differently here in the big stations compared to the small towns where I have tried them before - so they just redirect me to a travel agency of some sort where they can do a booking of a hotel - hence I end up at a midrange hotel instead of a decent ryokan - well you can win them all.

Fortunately my hotel is almost next to the train station so I get out and drop my backs - and then I take advantage of the super Japanese train system and my rail pass with unlimited travel. It is time for a day trip and head down the rail tracks for a while to get to Himeji - it is the next station from Okayama - just under 90k away.

Which will take a while - or just over 20 minutes - and I am in the small town.

Just as I walk out of the station I can immediately see the famous Himeji Castle down the road. This castle is very different from most of the other castles in Japan - it is actually original and not a reconstruction from the 60s like most of the other.

I walk down the road towards the castle and cross the moth surrounding the complex and it is time to walk through the gate and pay the admission fee. I walk around the ground for a bit looking at the castle main tower from the outside and some of the outlying buildings. Then I get into the castle and from the inside of the main tower it is quite easy to see this place is different from the reconstructed castles of Kumamoto or Nagoya. The inside actually looks old - basically because the inside is actually hundreds of years old.

I start walking up through the main tower. There are different sort of exhibitions inside the tower. They describe a bit of the history of old time Japan. Some of the more interesting displays are the samurai armors.

I get to the top of the tower and from up there the view is great. Not only can you see the entire old castle but also out over the entire modern city and out to the far distance.

I walk down from the top floor of the central tower and start walking around the castle ground and the neighboring garden. There are the ever present colorful fish which seems to be in any bit of water around Japan. And I can’t stop taking a few pictures of them gathering in the surface of the water - before heading back to the station and catching a train back to Okayama.
