Lavenders

I get up in the morning ready to go out and explore the lavender fields of Farm Tomita - but once again the weather is not on my side - it is raining hard again. I figure maybe I should wait for half an hour or so in my room - which has wifi which might have contributed to my decision of trying to wait out the rain. After a bit of a wait I realize there are no way around it - the rain will not stop. I need to go out and see the farm rain or no rain. I burrow an umbrella from the hostess of the place I am staying and leave my back behind and of I go. I walk the 1½k down through the rain to the farm.

And I see the first of the famous lavender fields. They are outside the farm area itself and they have build up a small viewing platform so you can see the lavenders a bit from above. I take a few photos of these lavenders and then I start searching for the ticket gate for the entrance to the farm. I can’t find it. Apparently the entrance to the farm is free of charge - so I just go in and have a look around the area. I walk along the different flower fields on farm - there are not just lavenders but also different sorts of flowers - which I doubt can be used in perfume production.

On the farm is a small production facility for making lavender extract used as the base for perfume production. And there are many different shop selling different sorts of lavender product from flowers to soap to perfume and pure lavender extract. And of course you cannot visit the farm without trying the famous Tomita specialty - lavender flavored ice cream. Lavender flavor is a bit like lemon for those who still have not tried this special ice cream flavor.

After the farm I am more or less ready to head towards the station and go to Furano - but I still got a bit of time left before my train is departing - hence I might as well do a bit of sightseeing. There are some excellent hiking tracks above the station area - but considering how much it has rained this morning they are probably quite wet and slippery - so I give them a miss and head for a couple of shrines of the city instead - yeah I know I am a sucker for Shinto Shrines - they still fascinate me even though I have seen quite a few by now. I like looking at the two different shrines but now it is about time to return my umbrella and pick up my backs before going to the station.

So I walk back to my accommodation where I had left my backs behind. I want to walk the short way down to the station - but the lady at the accommodation doesn’t want me to walk through the rain without an umbrella. Hence as a parting gift she offers me an umbrella to keep as a momentum. At first I figure I don’t really need it for the short walk to the station but I take it anyways.

furano is one of the famous place in Japan because there was a tv-series filmed there :) and also famous for beautiful lavenders. I'd love to visit here one day.
