Fast trains

Nagoya Travel Blog › entry 22 of 43 › view all entries

Going through the country seem to be a travel through a country of opposite extremes. New and old - modern and old fashion all in the same country. Tranquil country side in some area stands out in stark contrast to the general craziness of Tokyo.

Fast trains

Yeah fast train approaching - now the trainriding can begin.

I leave Hiraizumi and thanks to the fast trains they have here in Japan the trip south is done quickly. I actually have to change train twice - but both stops are only for a couple of minutes - I was actually a little nervous about the stop in Tokyo. The station in Tokyo is pretty big - given it is the main hub in all of Japan for the shinkansen trains. But even though I only had a few minutes to find the right track for my next train and get over there it all works quite all right.

I get on the next train travelling towards Osaka - but I will get off in Nagoya. I get out and it is just early in the afternoon - I have managed to do sightseeing in the morning and travel 800k - and I still got a little time to explore the city.

But in reality I am not really up for much sightseeing today - the climate has change remarkably during my train ride. I left this morning in decent weather - nice and sunny with a low humidity. But now it is still sunny with a high humidity - which make the city a bit of a challenge for my sightseeing ambitions.

After hanging around for a while I figure I might as well get out and have a look around. I walk down towards the castle in the city - which is also the neighbor of the Achi Perfectual Gymnasium. Where I want to go early tomorrow morning - hence I use this sightseeing trip as a bit of a orientation tour for my early morning adventures tomorrow. Outside of the gymnasium are a long line of taxis waiting for costumers - there are none around but at six the sumo tournaments will end for the day and lots of people will be swarming out to catch a taxi. And sure at six people come out in huge numbers and the taxis get busy. I leave and go to have a look at a nearby temple where the lights in the many lamps have been turned on creating a special effect here in the early evening.

Aichi-ken Seinen-kaikan Youth Hostel
The hostel is located in the southern parts of central Nagoya close to some restaurants and nightlife area. IT is about 25 minutes walk from the JR station and 10 minutes from the closest metro station. The rooms are Japanese style room with tatami mats and futon for sleeping on the floor. There is a Japanese style bath open in the evening - and not in the morning which frequently comes as a surprise to Europeans.

The general facilities are lacking a bit - there are no kitchen and only one computer for internet in the lobby (which did not work). There were no wi-fi but I did manage to catch some unsecured network and use it. The only thing which the hostel got in abundance is lots and lots of wending machines.

There are a lock out period during the day where you cannot be inside from 10 till 15 and there are an early 23 o’clock curfew which kinda prevents the concept of a late night on the town.
