The Sake Museum

I walk a bit around town and I finally get to walk past the sake museum of Sapporo. I want to get in and learn all about the production of sake. So I am pretty excited as I enter into the museum. But once I am in it is a bit of a disappointment - the museum looks more like a shop selling sake instead of an actual museum about the production of sake.

But one little feature is a nice little film of production of sake. It is a little bit confusing since it is all Japanese without any English subtitles - but I have seen enough films about the production of beer and wine to sort of figure out the basics of what is going after watching the movie it is sort of time to get going again. I walk down the road and I get to the fish market of town. It take up a few blocks of the city and they got different sorts of fish - but what’s really attracting my attention is the huge amounts of crabs they got all over the place.

There are smaller crabs which are dead and placed on ice but they are also keeping some pretty big crabs alive inside some fish tanks. I think this is king crabs - of which I have heard about the red king crab which has become a pest in the north parts of the Atlantic Ocean along the Norwegian cost. Apparently some Russian researchers’ took some of the red king crab to try to raise them as food in the north western parts on the Russian arctic sea. This worked fine in the beginning with the crabs producing a lot of meat which the state controlled fishermen in the soviet era could harvest to meet the production target of the soviet fishing industry. Unfortunately the general environment is different in some way compared with the area around the Bering Strait (only Dane which got a strait, ocean and island named after him) where the crab originated. Hence the crab multiplied with incredible speed and spread further and further south along to Norway eating everything on its path and basically destroying the natural environment of the northern ocean. Of course the Japanese is delighted with a large new supply of king crab which should be a delicacy - which I still have not tried.

I walk on from the fish market and go to the Sapporo Beer Museum - which supposedly is one of the main attractions of the city. Unfortunately I am easily distracted when I try to walk from A to B every time I see something which is unfamiliar I tend to stop even though the locals probably think I am crazy looking at something so basic. One of the main things which tend to distract me is the parking garages in town. Every time a car drives into one I have a tendency to stop and observe - first the car goes in and then the shuffling of car in the elevators starts - this takes places many places in Sapporo - but to my knowledge nowhere in my hometown.

The Sapporo beer was the first place to produce European style beer model after the Berliner Brauerie where the first master brewer of Sapporo brewery had studied for two years. I head into the old brewery building to look at the museum - and there are a few bits and parts on display including one of the big boilers from the old times - but all in all I am a bit disappointed. It might be after I visited the brewery in Pilsen Czech Republic a few years back I am a bit hard to impress when it comes to beer museums. The best thing of the brewery is the second floor - where there is a small tasting lounge so you can by a set of three different Sapporo beers to taste the products of the brewery.

And it some of the cheapest draft beers you are likely to find anywhere in Japan considering they sell three small draft beers for 400 yen - or just over $4.

nha it was more of a beer tasting than a drinking contest. I guess in total it was a bit over ½ a litre of beer. Even I can handle that kind of quatity.
