So on Tuesday, August 7 I got the phone call asking if I could be at Ft. Bragg on the following Tuesday, which meant I had a week to drive across the country, but really only four days since I had too much stuff to do and couldn't possibly leave until Friday. Then once my plans were fixed I got another phone call saying I needed to be there on Monday at 8:30 am. Out of my four deployments this was the worst at being notified in advance. Luckily I just got new tires on my car and had its 200,000 mile checkup, which involved new belts, a full system flush, and the most expensive part of all, the windshield squirters. There was no way to leave before Friday. Tuesday was my last day at my 'real' job, Wednesday was packing and stuff, and Thursday was feline relocation.
Day One, Friday. I left at around 3 in the morning. After searching through my house to make sure I didn't forget anything, I turned on the bug bombs and locked the door, only to drive away and think of something left behind, knowing it was already too late.
