Meteor Crater
Outside Flagstaff is Meteor Crater. For being out in the middle of nowhere, it had a large number of visitors. When you drive up it actually has a big lip around the crater, where the museum is placed. They charge admission there. $15 for an adult!! Since they know if you've made it that far you aren't going to turn around no matter what they charge. So I asked the ranger if they have a military discount. She said yes, so I showed her my ID card. She asked if I was active, I said yes (all IDs are the same now). Then she asked if I was traveling from one post to another, so I said yes. Then she had the balls to ask if I had orders, so I said yes (which we don't always have on us.) but she wanted to see my orders. Sadly this type of discrimination is pretty common. Some people see you out of uniform and not on a base and they start acting like you're an escaped convict. Their discount is about as rude as me offering them an employee discount then asking for not only their id card but a paycheck as well. But I wasn't about to pay $15 to look at a big hole in the ground so went to my car and got out a copy of my orders. She stared at them for a long time, since they are easier to forge than an id card, then thanked me and handed me a free ticket. Not too bad of a discount. But I was still unde the impression that if I didn't have a copy of my orders she would call the police. Some people are like that.
The Crater museum has about six different high tech ways of describing how the meteor hit 50,000 years ago, plus after the video a tour guide will give the same story live and take you out on the rim. It's a good rest stop, but a bit expensive without a discount. But I couldn't stay for too long. I had to get to Albequerque before ten.
