Beautiful Desert

Joshua Tree is beautiful! A little uneasy at first, especially for someone (like me) who has never experienced the vast openness and desolation of a desert. After a couple days though, it becomes very intimate. The desert closes in and rises up to meet you, and a wonderful relationship is developed. Every star in the sky shines on you at night, and the sun rises in a blaze of crimson glory every morning to wake you. We happened to be there at full moon, and the brightness of it was breathtaking.
Joshua Tree is a superstar in the world of climbing, but it can be fully appreciated even by those who don't climb. Hidden Valley campground is recommended, as well as Jumbo Rocks. Hidden Valley is more remote, with fewer campsites. Jumbo Rocks has more campsites that are closer together, but the neighbors we had were really neat and we ended up sitting around the fires with several new friends until early in the morning.
The neighboring city of 29 Palms is definitely in the sticks and there's nothing much to do there, but a couple restaurants there are worth checking out. There's also a bunch of beautiful murals in town.
