Weekend in Burlington, One of Many
June 20, 2009
This little college town that borders Lake Champlain is everything one would expect from a New England town ... and more! When my daughter announced she would be attending college there, I was thrilled! Having visited the town a few times to visit a friends daughter, I knew of some of its charms already. The fact it overlooks beautiful Lake Champlain would be enough on its own. Add in the fact it has a quaint village atmosphere. . . A downtown which is partly blocked off for pedestrian only traffic. . . Numerous restaurants and shops . . . a population of eclectic people from students to professors ... and its got my vote as best New England town! I love the fact that Vermonters are all about organic foods and "green" living. Everyone seems to be into something positive whether it is an athletic lifestyle, an enthusiasm for the outdoors, creative expression, whatever! So for the next two years I hope to be visiting on a regular basis. My modes of transportation will be changing (there is an airport here) as well as my dwellings (there is a campground close by) . . . You will be hearing a lot from me about this great town!

Of course Vermonters are dog fri…
Creative Breakfast
This was a FABULOUS breakfast place we went to in downtown Burlington. The menu was great, all fresh organic ingredients. I had a fresh popover with herb scrambled eggs, home fries and fruit. My husband had a beautiful omelet with this great fresh baked bread. It was very good! Our timing was right because when we left this place on Sunday morning, they were taking names as a long line had formed. The staff was friendly ... a long haired boy with flip flops skillfully waited on us. We had a couple of young students elbow close to our right, while to our left an older couple were debating politics. I had to run past the delicious pastries when I left(my daughter told me I had put on weight since she last saw me ... nice kid!)

Organic Pizza
American Flatbread Company is a wood fired pizza restaurant where food is hand made entirely from organic and natural ingredients. Even the tomato sauce is organic. The salads come from the local farms. You won't find just pepperoni or sausage here. Try "fresh pesto" or "5 cheese pizza, fresh from local dairies". The crust is very thin (hence the name) and luckily you can eat a lot of this delicious pizza! Oh, and of course, they have their own house brewed beer. Expect to wait a long time for a seat on the weekends, but it will be worth it.
Best Ice Cream
It is hard to believe anyone in this world has not heard of, or, even more criminal, has not TRIED Ben & Jerry's ice cream! I guess Italian gelatto is also very good, but, come on. This is U.S.A. so I am sure the fat content is much higher. But who cares! Ben & Jerry's is worth it. The flagship store is on Church St. But a short distance from Burlington is the factory store which is located in Waterbury, Vermont. Where else will you find "Cherry Garcia" or "Carmel Sutra" ice cream, but here! Gotta love it.

Great Beer
Vermont's original brewpub! It has been named one of the best 25 breweries in the U.S.A. Besides the 10 fresh ales and lagers from their cellar brewery, they have a laundry list of beers and even give you the history of beer on their menu. We had lunch here and I had a nice sandwich on their outside patio. Again, our timing was good as a long line is usually ALWAYS the case at this popular downtown establishment. You can also get dinner and a late night menu here. Believe it or not, we never had any beer here. I put myself "on the wagon" recently and had lemonade and my husband had wine.
