19 people crammed in to a boat, somehow we stayed in good spirits

I think it was Mark Twain that once wrote 'an adventure is something you don't enjoy while it is happening'.  That's probably the most apt description of our boat trip from Luang Prabang to Nong Kiew.  For starters no one knows how long it will take, all we have is a 6 to 10 hour range to work with. We've now learnt to assume 10 hours and anything else is a bonus.

You'd think I'd have learnt from the painful boat trip from Huay Xing to Luang Prabang, but once again we piled in to a cramped space with hard wooden seats.

The boat broke down 3 or 4 times along the way, and it reached the point where you didn't even look up from your cards when you heard the motor splutter then stop.

The most memorable stop would have to be where, as a result of trying this trip just after dry season, the river was too low so everyone had to get out and walk for a kilometre.  I did get lucky here though since through a complicated game of charades, the driver indicated he wanted me to sit on the bow of the boat. Initially I presumed this was a weight distribution thing, so I was a llittle surprised when he also handed me an oar, and sure enough I had to help steer the between a few rocks. As I said to an American afterwards, I'm not sure if I'm flattered that he thought I could row, or insulted that he thought my ass could counterbalance an entire boat :)

Fortunately, I had good company on the trip (Nick, Lindsey, Brett and Sinead) so now that the pain has left I think I'll look back on the trip with fond memories....hopefully
